What Is a Fireplace Insert?

A fireplace insert is a sealed appliance installed inside an existing fireplace. Think of it as a fireplace within your fireplace. Instead of an open fire losing heat up the chimney, an insert contains the fire inside a metal firebox and vents exhaust through a chimney liner.

Why Fireplace Inserts Exist

Traditional masonry fireplaces are beautiful, but they are not very efficient.
A large amount of the heat they produce escapes up the chimney.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, older open fireplaces can draw warm
air from the home and send it out the chimney along with smoke.

Modern inserts solve that problem.
They burn fuel inside a controlled firebox and push heat into the room.

Types of Fireplace Inserts

The three most common types are:

Gas Inserts

Most popular today.
Benefits:

  • Easy to operate
  • Clean burning
  • High heat output

Wood Inserts

Traditional wood-burning experience with improved efficiency.

Pellet Inserts

Use compressed wood pellets and operate with automatic feeding systems.

When Homeowners Choose an Insert

An insert is often the best solution when:
• You already have a open front fireplace
• You want more heat
• You want easier operation

Do Inserts Require Venting?

Yes.

Most inserts use a chimney liner system to safely vent exhaust. This liner runs from the insert up through the chimney.

Is an Insert Better Than an Open Fireplace?

For heating efficiency, usually yes.
Sealed fireplaces and inserts are designed to deliver significantly more usable heat into the room.
However, the right option depends on your home and your goals.
